Chysauster

Chysauster is an Iron Age courtyard-house village in the hills above Penzance — one of the best-preserved in Britain. Eight stone houses line either side of a central street, their walls still shoulder-high after nearly two thousand years. A souterrain (Cornish *fogou*) opens off one house; no-one is fully sure what it was for. Managed by English Heritage, reached by a footpath across farmland from the B3311. Walking it in mist is as close to time-travel as Cornwall gets.
