Hayle was once Cornwall's great industrial harbour — Harvey's foundry built engine-houses for the world from here — and it's now a curious mix of estuary sandbanks, surf dunes, and the restless birdlife of the Hayle Saltings RSPB reserve. The long curve of Hayle Towans runs from the river mouth up to Gwithian. Rough around some edges and all the better for it.
